‘Des lieux extra ! Faire du théâtre de tout, faire du théâtre partout’ (Extraordinary places! Make theatre out of everything, make theatre everywhere) and Le Pouvoir des fleurs (The Power of Flowers) are two artistic, heritage and participatory projects that invite the residents of Avignon to discover the Festival's venues and shows.

Through exploring archives and practising photography, theatre, linocut, watercolour and collage, participants were encouraged to embrace this heritage and learn about the unique artistic languages and worlds featured in the Festival programme. To do so, they were accompanied by artists Thomas Bohl, Marie Darodes, Pauline Tralongo and the Maâloum Company.

This installation-based presentation is also an opportunity to showcase five iconic Festival d'Avignon shows in a new way. Come and discover or rediscover Pascal Rambert's Gilgamesh, Pina Bausch's Nelken, Michael Lonsdale's La Vie Mode d'Emploi, Champ d'expériences premier by the Ilotopie collective, and Marcos Mauro's Sonoma...

All these unique artistic adventures have helped to write the history of this extraordinary Festival!

EXTRA INSTALLATIONS! The Avignon Festival in five shows

While the Vouland Museum in Martel will be focusing on Martel in 2026 and 2027, this first semester Eugène Martel (1869-1947) is surrounded by 19 other artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, offering constantly renewed perspectives on Provence.

Exhibition "On dirit le sud" (It feels like the South)

Summer and winter alike, a blanket of white persists at the summit of Mont Ventoux. This giant is our Provençal Mount Fuji. At its feet, countless springs flow silently, emerging here and there.
Some are well known: Fontaine de Vaucluse and the Groseau spring.
Joël-Claude Meffre, poet and archaeologist, and Ji Dahai, painter and calligrapher, visited around twenty of them in a year. Ji Dahai sketched each of these springs in his notebooks, using ink and brush, capturing them as he saw them. Joël-Claude Meffre searched the sources of his words for the words that would be heard. It was in Brantes, after the last visit, that the word “resurgence” emerged as the key.

Madeleine Lemaire (1845–1928), French painter, pastel artist, engraver, and illustrator, made her debut at the 1864 Salon. Her works, including portraits and floral compositions, are part of the Musée d'Orsay's collections.
During the Belle Époque, the artist held a musical and literary salon where writers, musicians, actors, and actresses gathered. Among others, Robert de Montesquiou and Marcel Proust frequented the salon.
Madeleine Lemaire illustrated Marcel Proust's collection Les Plaisirs et les Jours, published in 1896 by Calmann-Lévy, with her floral watercolors.

The Angladon Museum pays tribute to its founders, artists and collectors from Avignon, heirs to the Jacques Doucet collection. 170 of their works are exhibited in a clash evoking the atmosphere of their workshop.
We owe them the Museum that bears their name, but who were Jean Angladon and Paulette Martin? They were husband and wife, artists and collectors, heirs to the collection of paintings and art objects of their great uncle Jacques Doucet.
Thanks to them, these treasures, including masterpieces by Sisley, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Picasso, can now be admired in Avignon.
Painters, engravers, they led an extraordinary artistic companionship, each listening to the other, sometimes inspired by the same patterns while expressing each a style, a singular personality.
The Angladon Museum pays tribute to them through this exhibition.

At the Chartreuse de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc presents *Le Grand Fleuve*, an exhibition where sound becomes a living substance.
In the *bugade* (a laundry room, but also a place of care and forced confinement), the eye is first drawn to the space itself. The walls, the volumes, the charred prison door, left there, striking. The architecture already bears layers of history, physical, visible, scar-like traces.
It is from this point that Abonnenc’s work unfolds. For over twenty years, the artist has been exploring the legacies of colonialism, diasporic memories, and forms of creolization. Here, he extends this research through a unique sonic immersion, fueled by recordings made at the very heart of the site: voices, echoes, breaths, acoustic traces. With singer Bruno Bonhoure, he records fragments in the bugade and in other spaces of the Chartreuse, such as the chapter house, turning the site into a true sounding board, an amplifier.

Angladon Museum, Avignon 

Here you can discover the exceptional collection of 17th- and 18th-century decorative arts that Louis Vouland (1883-1973), a food industry industrialist, built up over some fifty years for this house where he settled in 1927. Furniture, earthenware, porcelain, tapestries, clocks, chandeliers, mirrors and Chinese objects create the intimate atmosphere of this timeless house museum, where the magic of the 18th-century spirit is at work.

The museum presents a permanent collection of Decorative Arts from the 17th and 18th centuries. It also presents works by 19th and 20th century Proven&ccedil;al artists from the museum&#39;s collection, during thematic or monographic exhibitions.

Museum Louis Vouland, Avignon  

Founded by Pope Innocent VI in 1356, it is one of the largest and most remarkable monasteries of the Carthusian order, with a church, three cloisters and forty cells, its gardens and the fresco chapel of the famous painter of the Papal Palace, Matteo Giovannetti. Today, La Chartreuse is also a major artists' residence....

The Chartreuse, Villeneuve lez Avignon  

On Mont Andaon, Fort Saint André was commissioned by Philippe IV le Bel and built under Jean II le Bon in the 14th century. This immense 750-meter-long fortification, built to protect the Abbey of Saint André and the town, enabled the King of France to assert his power in the region.

From Avignon, on the other side of the Rh&ocirc;ne and from even farther away, you can clearly see the fort standing proudly. But it is only once you are there&nbsp; that you can fully appreciate&nbsp; the strategic position&nbsp;of this fort dominating the Rh&ocirc;ne valley. From the top of its parapet walk, you can observe the Popes &#39;s Palace across the way, the Philippe IV le Bel tower, the saint Andr&eacute; abbey encompassed within the fort&#39;s defensive&nbsp; walls,&nbsp;the chartreuse&#39;s monastery in the village below and the entire surroundings countryside.&nbsp;

You can walk among the vestiges of the old medieval village and the chapel, visit the fort&#39;s buildings and rooms that have remained intact and learn about the aspects of military life from the Middle Ages up to the french revolution.

In an old mansion classified as a Historic Monument, the museum presents two masterpieces of the medieval West: the PRECIOUS IVORY SCULPTURE OF THE VIRGIN A CHILD (circa 1310) and the CELEBRE TABLE OF THE CORONATION OF THE VIRGIN, d'Enguerrand Quarton (1453-54) and a panorama of French painting from the 16th to the 18th century.

Museum of Pierre-de-Luxembourg, Villeneuve lez Avignon 

The monumental residence of the 14th-century pontiffs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Gothic palace in the world (15,000 m2 of floor space, equivalent to the volume of 4 Gothic cathedrals).

The visitor can see over 20 rooms, scenes of historic events, in particular the pope&rsquo;s private chambers and the frescoes painted by the Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti. The Popes&rsquo; Palace also offers the visitor continuous cultural activities throughout the year.

The ticket includes the visit of the Palace of the Popes as well as the histopad which is a touch pad that allows to live&nbsp;&nbsp;a temporal immersion in the major parts of the monument, entirely re-constituted as they could be in the 14th century.

Jean Vilar passed away in 1971. It immediately seemed necessary to collect documents relating to his work, those of the Théâtre National Populaire when he was its director (1951-63), and those of the Avignon Festival as a whole, which he created in 1947.
On the initiative of Paul Puaux, his closest collaborator and successor as director of the Festival d'Avignon (1971-79), the Association Jean Vilar was founded in 1972.
A joint effort by the Association, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the City of Avignon led to the certainty of the importance of a house dedicated to Jean Vilar and to reflection on today's world of the performing arts.
In 1979, with the city's acquisition of the Hôtel de Crochans, the Maison Jean Vilar became a place for exhibitions, archives and research, as well as a venue for meetings and events in keeping with the spirit of popular theater today. This project is part of a quadripartite agreement between the City of Avignon, the French Ministry of Culture, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Association Jean Vilar.
