In 1955, a local association was founded with the mission of establishing the museum on a heritage basis. It was housed in the building on Rue des Bonnes Gens, built between 1880 and 1883 to house part of the extensive collections of the Mulhouse Industrial Society. In addition to 6 million samples, the museum preserves nearly 50,000 textile documents: lengths of fabric, bedspreads, scarves, shawls, etc., from the 18th century to the present day. More broadly, textile printing is part of a vast textile family, important representative collections of which are also held at the Museum, such as the famous plangi, ikats, and batiks: the world of textile decoration, from all over the globe, is represented. The museum's mission is to promote a better understanding and appreciation of textile printing. Museum of decorative art, industrial museum, local history museum, society museum, fashion museum, the printing museum oscillates between many heritage poles, all of which have their importance.
