Free accessCount Rudolph of Altenburg founded a Benedictine abbey on his estate in Ottmarsheim, which was consecrated in 1049 by the Alsatian Pope Leo IX. This building generated much discussion and numerous studies during the Renaissance period, due to its octagonal shape, reminiscent of a pagan temple and directly inspired by the Palatine Chapel in Aachen. Many authors were puzzled by this, and some even interpreted it as a Temple of Mars. The abbey church suffered numerous fires throughout its history, beginning as early as 1272. Restorations also revealed magnificent 11th- and 15th-century frescoes. However, a major fire in 1991 caused considerable damage. It was only in 1999 that the building regained its splendor following extensive restoration work.On the Romanesque Route of Alsace, come and discover this building listed as a historical monument.
